LITURGY
Altar Servers
Assist the priest in the liturgy. Servers must have finished the fourth grade and have been trained in order to serve.
Eucharistic Ministers
These dedicated men and women assist in the distribution of Holy Communion during mass and also bring Communion to the sick and infirmed at their homes, hospital, or nursing home on a weekly basis.
Lectors
Lectors help proclaim the Word of God at Masses. They are typically scheduled to read once a month. Training sessions for good public readers are held for ninth graders through adults.
Music Ministry
Music and Liturgy are certainly the high-points of life here at St. John Vianney. People who gather for Sunday Liturgy to worship are aided by our music ministry program. A variety of musical forms enhances our Masses: from organist and leader of song, to choral groups and ensembles. Anyone who has a gifted singing voice or ability to play a musical instrument is sure to find a group to their liking:
- 7:45 A.M. Choir
- 9:30 A.M. Choir
- 11:15 A.M. Choir
Ushers
Ushers assist in the orderly execution of the church functions and celebrations. They help by greeting parishioners, seating them and taking up the offertory collection.
SPIRITUAL GROUPS
Bible Study
The Scriptures are prayed and explored to give participants a greater understanding and appreciation of the Word of God. Recent experience has shown that men, women and children have strengthened their relationship with God, and with their families by prayer. The following groups have formed:
Eucharistic Adoration
Plan to include the Lord in your daily spiritual life by the very concrete and specific way of contemplative prayer, Eucharistic Adoration. Currently we have four days of adoration each week: Tuesday and Thursday, all day; Wednesday evenings; and Fridays. We also have All Night Adoration on the First Friday of the month. Check our Adoration Schedule for times. Through adoration, parishes have seen an increase in vocations, a decrease in crime, answers to prayers, an increase in Mass attendance, and a deepening of faith. Please consider pledging a weekly hour to come to the chapel and pray before Jesus in adoration.
Ultreya
An Ultreya was formed in 1982 at St. John Vianney Church so that all Calvert County Catholic Cursillistas would be able to meet locally on a monthly basis. The word itself, Cursillo, means a short course in Christianity and the Ultreya was formed as a support group where those who have completed the course, called Cursillistas, come together to share:
- their piety (what aids they have used to bring them closer to Christ and their moment closest to Christ),
- their study (what they have done to know Christ better), and
- action (what they have done to bring Christ close into their lives and to bring others closer to Christ).
This local Ultreya enhances the sense of community and spiritual development as an extension of the Cusillo experience.
First Saturday Devotions
On the first Saturday of each month, an 8:00 A.M. Mass is conducted along with the Rosary. Confessions are also heard after Mass at this time.
Rosary
The Rosary is prayed every Monday at 9 A.M. in the Chapel to pray for Mary’s wish: increased devotion to her Son through her prayer, the rosary. Spend an hour in prayer of praise, petition, silence and one Mystery of the Rosary. Coordinator: Linda Vaulina (410) 535-0673
