MEETING HIGHLIGHTSOctober 4, 2010
1. Opening Prayer: The opening prayer was given by Bill Prochownick.
2. Welcome: The president welcomed everyone and briefly covered the agenda for the evening. 23 members were present and one new member: Eugene Gonzalez.
3. Secretary’s Report: June meeting highlights were previously distributed by email to all members. Any corrections, additions or changes can be made via email to the Secretary and/or the President so that Jack McFadden can then upload the final to the church’s website.
4. Treasurers Report: Maurice reported we are made $45 from last month’s 50/50 and donations. Maurice noted that the donations don’t often cover the expenses for the food and drink, however the 50/50 more than makes up the difference. The Crab feast made 374 dollars which was sent to the church office for deposit to our account.
5. Pastor’s Report:
· Father Daly thanks everyone for all our help with all the projects in the church
· Father announced that Father Ebenezer is visiting from Ghana.
· Safe Nights: Currently our church is scheduled to do Safe Nights from Dec 26 to Jan 1. One of the participating Church’s is backing out during, the week before ours, because of a facility issue. Father asked if we would be willing to do another week, Dec 19th to Dec 25th. Most were willing to help especially if the other Church would be willing to provide some of the man power. He will let us know of the final decision
· Father discussed an issue with the Church’s Grave yard. We currently have 120 plots left. At current rate, they will be used up in 5 to 7 years. We will start looking for new areas to expand. Current plans call for using the land where the two cottages are located and building a new building on main street to house retired priests. The Columbarium is full but there will be discussions with the Cemetery people to build another. There was support for that among the members.
· Catholic Charities will be closing soon. Father will soon be visiting Catholic Charities to discuss how St. John Vianney can support them as a Parish Partner. Our goal is to explore how they can continue services and be s part of our Community Ministries. It costs abut 500 thousand dollars to operate the program.
· Interfaith Council: The Council may be moving into the building where the God’s Gifts store is located.
· Father is looking of help. He needs help moving the library books from Jan Pedone’s . Office to the conference room in the MacFadden Center in the basement of the church. This is the room where Rocky Ragano recently made the bookshelves. We are scheduling the move during the afternoon of Oct 22. Let Father know if you can help with the move.
· The Building Committee met to start planning on renovating the Vianney room. Drawings have been received and funds are available. The estimated costs are about $500,000. If we also include both class rooms, the cost will approach $1,000,000. The Committee is examining starting a fund drive and reinstating the tithing program. . One question we wrestled with, “Should the Church hire a Fund Raiser for about $55,000” as we did with the church construction. Discussion followed concerning the pros and cons of that approach.. Father wants to begin construction by April of 2011.
· Father is planning a trip to our sister parish Mexico near Thanksgiving. Discussion followed concerning the dangers of that trip at this time. Most of us suggested he reschedule.
· Father will be participating in an interfaith service at the Southern Maryland Islamic Center in Prince Frederick in an effort to show that we support our Muslim friends. The war is against terrorists, not the religion. It will be on either 13th or 14th of Oct.
