PAST MEETING HIGHLIGHTS
1 June 2009

1. Opening Prayer:

The opening prayer was led by Father Daly.

2. Welcome;

The president welcomed everyone including new member Steve McGrane.  A total of 22 members signed in for the meeting. We were happy to see George Sullivan and Walter Sands back after being absent due to family and medical reasons.

3. Secretary Report – In the absence of the secretary, the President read the minutes from the May Highlights   There were no corrections or additions so the minutes were accepted as distributed.  The President reminded everyone that the meeting highlights were available via the Men’s Club Website on the church website.  Thanks again to Jack McFadden for arranging and maintaining that function..

4. Treasurer Report – The Treasurer report was given by Joe Garcia.  No change.  We are in the black for the events that have been completed since we collected more funds than we expended.  Meeting expenses are also in the black.

5. Pastor’s Report - Father Daly thanked the club members who participated in the May Procession and providing the cookout for all attendees.  .He indicated that attendance was less then they would like to see and that consideration is being given to doing it on a Sunday.

He also passed his thanks to all Club members who participate in the First Sunday Breakfast.  He reminded everyone that June would be the last breakfast until September.

o       Father spoke about the issue of not having an assigned visiting priest.  He is thankful that Father Matt Allman is helping out when he can spear time from his university studies; and for Father Cleary and for Father Flanagen, who conducted our Parish Mission, also have stepped in when they can.   Father Cleary will be covering for Father Daly when Father goes to Mississippi to help celebrate Father Enslow’s 60th anniversary.  A group from the Men’s Club is also going and plans to leave on the 25th of July and return on the 30th

o

o       Work Camp: Parish young people will be going to a work camp July 5th to 11th and will be conducting a car wash to raise funds to help defray travel costs.

o       Our own work camp is ready with 47 plus projects.  Father described several changes from last year including not using the Calvert High showers.  Father described events the Men’s Club participate in such as the Breakfasts, a special dinner mean (the program brings their own food), and a cruse for staff after the camp is over.

o       The Parish Picnic has been moved to August 2nd this year to coincide with the feast day for Saint John Vianney.  There will be a complimentary performance in the theater during the picnic.

o       Father also talked about his participation in a committee to develop a nursing home on land just north of the hospital.  The effort includes the hospital and the Diocesan Housing Group.  He also described the current capabilities of the current facility at the hospital.

o       He next talked about his meetings about catholic schools.  Twelve have been closed in the last 3 years and more are probably to follow.  He indicated that the elementary schools days are probably numbered.  High Schools are in better shape because they have more support.  He next described the changes that are coming concerning parish assessments for school support.  There has never been enough money to fully support the schools.  Now all assistance will to to K through high school tuition assistance.  The level will be increased to 6 million but applications totaled 20 million… Beginning July 1, 2010, Pastors with schools will contribute 3% and pastors without schools will go to 9% plus12% will go to the Archdioceses.  Not included in the base is the building fund, poor box, candles.  Changes will increase our contribution to $42,000.  Last year it was $8,000. Summary of our costs include $75,000…$42,000-$43,000 for catholic schools tuition based on financial need.  Religious education here is $75,000 and he has asked Jan Padone to review our needs.

o       Father wants to “ramp up” our remodeling plans, expand the building fund approval etc, by the time the new assessment comes due in 2010.  He discussed what he wants our church to be know for; “Remembering the Poor, Teaching the Faith, and being Stewards of the Environment.” Joe Allman is working with the Chestnut Fund to see about selling our TDRs to the County.  This could provide $150 to $160,000 that could be used to purchase the Suburban Propane property.  He also discussed ideas of creating a hiking trail on our unused land.  He next conducted a review of existing space in our buildings and how they relate to future needs.

o       Other items:  Father reported that a parishioner has given a truck that will be transported to our sister parish in Mexico.  He hopes to load it with rectory supplies and clothes

o       There is going to be a new 2nd collection for the Priests retirement fund.  There is a need to for 34 million to meet current needs.  There was only 17 million available in 2007.  After the downturn that number is now xxx.  Each parish will be assessed 16 thousand for each retired priest.  The Archdiocese is also separating retirement and health care funds and the dioceses will not pay for long term care for priests.  They plan to use Medicare.  There is also some discussion of using electronic deposit instead of the basket collection .. Discussion followed on pluses and minuses.
